The only thing I've seen called "paillettes" were about the size of 
sequins but without the facets (where the edge is bent up).  This was 
in embroidery, and the idea was to sew them on by going up through the 
center hole and down at the 4 quadrants.

But I do remember those ugly knit hats with the big plastic disks with 
an off-center hole so they hung and moved about.
