I seem to remember someone saying a while ago that butterflies are frequenty found on lace hand made in China for about 4 pence an hour. There are two ways of looking at this situation. (a) we shouldn't be buying things where the amount paid to the maker is so small (b) If no-one buys these items, the maker doesn't eat.
We also can't compare wages in one country with another. I had a friend who visited Rumania and couldn't bring money out. She had the equivalent of GBP5 left at the end of her stay and had trouble spending it because everything was so cheap. I'm almost at the point of regarding GBP5 as small change (but not quite).
