I've just been Googling and found a possible source of ultrafine silk thread - filaments of silk sold for opthalmic and micro surgery sutures, the finest being 0.02 mm diameter. The finest thread in the Wolter-Kampmann book is 6dD which I think means 0.06 mm diameter (15 band/15 slip Egyptian cotton).

I don't know if this is available for non medical use, and I bet it's expensive, but if anyone is interested:
