That's the term for lace that is made by sewing machine, onto a material that will dissolve in a chemical bath. This leaves just the stitching, with holes where the support material was not embroidered. Nowadays, people do this on water-soluble stabilizer. In the old days, though, they used a material that was different from the fiber content of the thread, so that the one would be destroyed and the other unharmed by the chemical bath. I can't remember what was used--maybe cotton thread on silk fabric? Because one is cellulose and the other protein, there are things that will dissolve one and leave the other intact. Robin P.
