Dear Lacemakers,

I recommend the new issue of "Ornament" magazine (Vol. 30, #3) available in
U.S. and Canada, which has 5 butterflies on the cover. In a public library or
at a large bookstore such as Barnes & Noble or Borders you can sit down and
read it. There is a 2-page article on pp. 68-69 about Silvia Fedorova, Slovak
fiber artist and designer. It is illustrated with 5 color pictures of lace
made of shredded plastic bags and copper electrical wire, one of which shows
her at her lace pillow.

This type of lace was briefly mentioned on Arachne several months ago. When
the 2004 OIDFA tour stopped in Bratislava, we must have been very close to her
lace studio, which the article says overlooks a main square and has a view of
the city's historic castle.

In 1987, Fedorova won the Golden Bobbin award at the 3rd Lace Biennial in
Brussels for a 17-panel installation piece made of cotton and silk.

Same magazine, pp. 52-55, has an article about Mariska Karasz. She designed
women's and children's clothing 1920-40 (inspired by traditional Hungarian
designs) and was author of a book on embroidery in 1949 (when there were very
few
new embroidery books). Some Arachnes may be interested in this, and the fact
an exhibit of her work was at Univ. of Georgia recently, and a catalog
published to accompany the exhibit.
