According to most dictionaries, the origin of the word "lawn" as applied to fabric comes from the French town Laon :)

Also, while my "family in the village" in Poland whitened linen (sheets, tablecloths, dish towels) out in the sun, they always did that by draping the things over bushes, never spreading them on the grass on the ground, because stains from cut grass are hard to remove, while leaves of shrubs don't stain.
