"Only do Torchon"???? Yikes! Anyone who says that
does not really know Torchon lace. Talk to anyone who
has taken the 'Torchon for Teachers' class -- often
also known as Torchon Torture.

I'd hate for anyone to count the number of mistakes in
my class sampler. (And I've been making lace for many
years.) There are so many stitch combinations and
variations that it could take a lifetime to really
learn all of them, and do them well.

Sure, we use Torchon for teaching beginners. The lace
lends itself to making patterns that use only a very
few basic skills and still look pretty. As the
learning lacemaker builds confidence and skills, more
stitches and techniques can be added to the lessons.
Torchon builds a good foundation of lacemaking skills
that can be expanded to include other forms of laces,
as well as create delectible works of art.

I have observed that many larger lace pieces are made
with Torchon, such as tablecloths, and the currently
popular scarves that use enlarged Torchon patterns.

Yes, I like to dabble in many different kinds of lace,
but I do as much Torchon as the other lace styles
combined. The person who concentrates on one kind of
lace, whatever that kind is, should be admired for
preserverence and consistency. Be happy you live
today when you can choose. Many lacemakers in history
knew just the lace made in their villages. Keep on
making Torchon, and be proud of every piece.

Happy lacing, whatever kind you make.
