At last my latest book is nearly finished, Textiles of South-East Asia. I am
just in the middle of doing the index. This is why I have been lurking (but
still enjoying all the letters) for so long. Thanks for mentioning my name.

I am way above the floods, which are truly dreadful in Worcestershire and
Gloucester, Midlands counties - places that never ever had flooding before are
still under water. However, I had a nasty adventure on the night of the
torrential rain. I had been teaching Polish embroidery in mid-Wales for two
days and set off back home on an evil wet Friday. After about half an hour, I
met the first flood across the road. Other cars were getting through, so I
gritted my teeth and followed, only to find a second flood, then a third. I
am frightened of floods and thought it better to go forwards than turn back.
This was not a good idea, for I met ten major floods in all, and about a
hundred small ones. Most cars waited to get through each flood in turn, but
others were imaptient and created chaos. Worse was to come, with a river
flowing sideways through the town of Craven Arms and police and a fire-engine
guiding the traffic. I had no choice but to go on and got through eventually.
I went over high Clee hill to get home, but still more floods, it was
unbelievable. Finally, three more floods and I was home, unloading my
precious textiles, all quite dry.

However, all was not OK at home. Water had come through the downstairs
ceilings (near the outside walls), finding its way through the roof light
seals in my loft-conversion. A large pool of water lapped about the kitchen
floor, so I put on rubber boots and mopped it up and put bowls and baths etc
under everything. Luckily not too much damage and eventually all dried up,
but everything is now covered with polythene, just in case. Surprisingly,
upstairs quite dry except for a trickle and nothing in my collection damaged.
I must consider I am lucky not to be in a real flood, and that I got home safe
and sound.
