Hello Diana
Was William Fairall notorious!!
In Kent and Sussex he was, but they are not traditional lacemaking
areas which is why I wouldn't really expect to find a bobbin with his
name on. He was hanged an gibbotted for smuggling. Full story at

Hanging bobbins are usually connected with the lacemaking area or are
unusual in some way i.e. Franz Muller who committed the first murder
on a railway train.
I'm not a aware of any lacemaking connection with my Miles
Weatherhill, but it was a particularly horrible crime. Though I did
find info on the website of Bucks County Records Office which states
that Miles Weatherhill was sentenced for murder - 9th March 1868. He
was executed on 6th April 1868. In 1867, he fell in love with Sarah
Bell who was working as cook for Rev Anthony Plow, the vicar of Christ
Church, Todmorden at Todmorden Vicarage. The vicar refused permission
for Miles to call on Sarah. Sarah returned to her family in York, and
Miles followed her to persuade her to return to Todmorden. She
refused, and in a rage, Miles returned to Todmorden on 2nd March 1868,
broke into the vicarage and killed the vicar, the vicar's baby
daughter, and Jane Smith, a servant. He was tried and hanged at
Manchester jail in 1868.
When I have some time to spare!! I try researching the story to see if
there's any lace connection.
Regards
Diana

Subject: Re: [lace] Hanging bobbins
It's well out of the traditional lace making area so I doubt there
was ever a bobbin to commemorate William Fairall who hanged at Tyburn
in 1749, but if ever anyone comes across one PLEASE let me know!

With all this talk about hanging bobbins, has anyone ever come
across one for Sarah Dazeley? It is mentioned in the Springett's
book 'Success to the Lace Pillow' but they say they had never seen
one themselves so couldn't confirm its existence. This is the one
I would be interested in as Sarah did her fell deed, of killing her
second husband, in the village I was brought up in (Wrestlingworth
in Bedfordshire - don't worry, people living 7 miles away had never
heard of it either!) If anyone knows anything about this bobbin I
would be interested to hear from them.
