This discussion about modern and/or contemporary lace is coming up on Arachne every now and then. We all wish that lace is also included in Arts and not only known as a craft or a hobby. Perhaps we should look what lace-artists already have accomplished in this. In the Czech Republic there are lace-artists like Milca Eremiàsovà, in Germany Gabriele Grohmann, in Holland Els Meeuwsen en Ria de Ruiter. In Holland we have several groups experimenting in lace and making beautiful things, which can be considered as art. For instance the group Experikant. They have a beautiful website: www.experikant.nl

Jeri wrote, that we, lace-makers have to step out and publicize about lace in i.e. fiber arts magazines. Here in Holland I asked the publisher of a fiber art magazine, Textiel Plus, why they published so seldom about lace. The answer was, you have you own magazine. About lace is published enough in that special magazine.

An other way to make artists aware of lace and the possibilities of it, is to teach art-students. this spring I gave about 8 lessons bobbin lace in the art-school of Amsterdam, the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. I was asked by a teacher Jewelry to do so. Hopefully this will be continued next season in the Textile-department or for all students. This way they know a little bit about the technique and its possibilities and will develop their own way to include bobbin lace or lace in their work.

The teacher Jewelry included lace in her work to be seen at the site www.iriseichenberg.nl She did not make it herself, because she moved to the US directly after her start in bobbin lace making. She will be teaching next year in America, so perhaps she will also organize a course bobbin lace at that art-school

Happy lacing
