Dear Jane, The red rubber bands used by the postman in the UK are fine for the bobbin winder (exactly what is running mine at present). The Australian Post Office uses bigger ones that really aren't good. It is really a matter of try what is at hand until you find one that is suitable - I can tell you that hair ties don't work (because of the little metal joining bit).
