I don't think Catherine Barley wrote a beginners needlelace book. (If I'm wrong, someone please tell me the title and publisher so I can add it to my collection..). Her Needlelace - Techniques.... may not be a beginners book, but I think the instructions in the early chapters (on various traditional needlaces) are quite clear enough for a beginner to needlelace to learn from, so long as you don't want lots of graded projects to introduce one new bit of technique each. The beginners' needlelace book I have, and used alongside Catherine Barley's book, is by Valerie Grimshaw - I can't remember the exact title, published by Batsford. It's good, albeit pretty basic, but I mostly prefer to use the Barley book .
I still class myself as a beginner at needlelace, not having had the time or patience to do much of it, but it is a very pleasant sort of lacemaking to carry around - the needlelace pillow is not necessary, except perhaps for large pieces which would be awkward to hold while working on them.
