Devon,

I recommend you do a Google search for the Textile Museum in Washington (in
the Embassy area, and difficult to park), and also the DAR Museum (close to the
White House). The DAR Museum has a well-known sampler collection, and there
may be laces there, as well. At least, I would think there will be samplers
of Colonial period needlelaces.

If you have never been to the Hillwood Museum and Gardens, about which you
initiated a discussion on Arachne a couple years ago, that would be another to
Google. There is a limited amount of furnishings lace, which can be seen in
dining room and I seem to remember in one bedroom, but this is definitely a
site you should see for the sheer richness of a style of living rarely seen
today.

Another place you might like to visit is the Library of Congress, to see what
they have in terms of lace reference books. Original pieces of Ipswich Laces
are supposed to be at the Library of Congress. Re-read the Introduction to
"The Laces of Ipswich" by Marta Cotterell Raffel, to get further details that
will make it easier for you to locate them. Copies of the Library of
Congress-owned laces were made by the late Michael Auclair, who was a member of
The
Lace Guild of New York (no longer in existence) when I belonged. Michael's
copies were in the John Whipple House in Ipswich when I visited about 10 years
ago, but you might be able to view the originals in Washington!

You know how disappointing it is to get to a place and be denied access to
parts of collections you would like to see. In all cases, I would write and
verify you will be able to see what you are interested in, so as to maximize
your
time. Please note that September 24th is a Monday, and some places may not
be open, or staff may not be available to you.
