Thank you all for your suggestions regarding felt.
I have an old woollen blanket that I intended to use, but even after
hot washing (60°C) it it stayed too soft - I'm going to use it to
build up the pillow dome but then I want something to hold the
needles better above that. I might try to wash it again at 90°C.
Saddle felt is a good suggestion - I found some suppliers in Germany
googling for "Sattelfilz". And I found a shop in Berlin that seems to
have all kinds of felt (modulor.de)- I'm going to visit that on
Saturday (though people on the internet warned to go there - they
have all kinds of stuff for all kinds of hobbies so it's probable to
spent way too much money there ;).
