Hi Sue!

Snowflakes are a definitive feature of Binche lace, and also are found in
Flanders, Mechlin, and other similar continental laces. There are hundreds
(maybe a slight exaggeration) of different snowflakes, depending on how many
pairs are involved and whether the snowflake is regular or irregular (and there
are a number of things that can require an irregular snowflake).

So essentially, if you're wanting to drop a snowflake into a point ground
piece, you've got a lot of fiddling to do! If you're captivated by the look of
snowflakes, however, and want to learn to do them, I suggest that you take up
Flanders, and if you've got some experience there, then move on to Binche where
you'll meet more snowflakes than you ever imagined! Michael Giusiana's books
on Flanders and Binche are full of information.

Enjoy!! I have loved working with snowflakes!!
