Hello Nicky
You can get clear film to cover the glass (which does not impair
visibility). This wil hold the glass in place when it
gets broken, so as to minimize any potential harm.
One UK company that sells it is: www.abodewindowfilms.co.uk According
to their website it comes in 5' width and costs from £5 per metre.
But there must be loads of others. Just try google.

Dear Spiders
My husband has made some very nice display cases for me, at the moment
they have temporary sliding hardboard covers to protect the contents -
my collection of continental bobbins. But as I am wanting to use them
for possible public display I really don't want them on "open" show.
Glass covers will protect the contents and allow people to see them
clearly, but of course this raises the safety issue - accidents and
injury from broken glass either whilst on display or for that matter
in transit. We had thought of perspex but I don't think that has the
same clear quality as glass, do any of you have a suggestion for an
alternative please as I'm sure there must be somethng else that we can
use.
many thanks
