Shown on page 247 of December 2007 "Architectural Digest" magazine -
Imperial Russian tortoiseshell-and-black-lace fan. Has a
diamond-and-silver cipher
of Empress Maria Feodorovna, the mother of Czar Nicholas II.
You can see it (and details) at _www.romanovrussia.com_

center, then go to page

This is fan is like some of those I saw at the Fan Museum at Greenwich
London
several years ago now. They were holding an exhibition of Fans from the
Hermitage and which fans had belonged to Maria Feodorovna. Many of the fans
had been presented to her by the countries she visited on state visits.
I spent quite a long time in the museum looking at the collection as there
were so many fans to look at.
If you go to the Hermitage Museum site
http://www.hermitagemuseum.org/html_En/index.html then make a Quick Search
using the box in the left hand menu, search for the one word Fans, and you
should get up several pages of fans. Do not use the link which appears above
the set of 4 fans, link entitled "next 7-30 matches" which takes you to
other parts of the museums collections. Instead go to the bottom of the
page and select "Next 5-16 Matches" in order to see the next page of fans.
You will find that included on the pages are other items but there are fans
mixed in so keep going through the pages. If you select one of the fans on
a page you will go forward to a larger version of that fan and to the right
of the picture will be two links for further enlargements of different
sizes to choose from.
If you go to the Fan Museum website http://www.fan-museum.org/ then from
the drop down list entitled About the Museum and select Temporary
Exhibitions you can scroll down the list of exhibitions over the years to
"Lace Fans 13th Aug. 2002-22nd. Dec. 2002". This will take you to a page of
just a few lace fans to look at. The pity is that you can't enlarge those
fans shown here, but I suppose that is understandable as they want you to
visit the museum instead of viewing their exhibits online. .
