One can buy contact paper without the shine and that works well.
Yes indeed. But the shiny one is dirt cheap at every supermarket - less than $1 a roll for us - and it goes a loooooong way!! Personally I prefer blue for white thread, and green for black.
All you need do it to scrub it with a new Scotchbrite scourer for a couple of seconds and woosh - you've got your matt film
