There are bobbin and tatting lace books published purely in Japanese - I
have a beauty, ISBN 4-579-10822-1, brought back from Japan by a friend, and
she has several others. And a Google search of "bobbin lace Japan" and go
to the end of the list for all Japanese script sites will bring up some of
the most startlingly beautiful lace. So there's got to be a fair few
lacemakers there.

Dear Census takers,

When I went to OIDFA in Lund Sweden, there were many Japanese lacemakers in
attendance. Perhaps they were planning OIDFA 2010 that far in advance!

Anyway, I found this so interesting that I counted the number there from
each country. I found there were as many Japanese lacemakers as lacemakers
from
the UK, where the next OIDFA (Nottingham) Congress was to be held. The
Japanese lacemakers have exhibited beautiful laces at all recent OIDFA
Congresses
I've attended. Further, one recent year they were the featured lacemakers
at the annual meeting of Hungarian lacemakers in Kiskunhalas.

So, think about what I found on a casual basis, combine that with the fact
OIDFA 2010 will be in Japan, and guess/estimate.
