Over the years DH and I have visited the museum a number of times and
have seen it change from just a few pieces of lace in showcasesand small
lace machines(made in Nottingham) to 3 years ago and beautiful display
of lace and a very large machine. The latter was making lace at least 4
m. wide (didn't have a tape measure, but it was v.wide).
The lace display was of lace starting in the C17th through into modern
'times'. It included use on underwear, swimming costumes etc. The
displays from the late C19th into the C20th were amazing with high
fashion houses well represented. If anyone is interested I could try
and email photos over.
The museum also houses a large collection of Rodin sculptures and
visiting painters exhibitions.
We went into the shop Nicky mentioned, they have some interesting
postcards of the old factories. Further on past the Town Hall, quite
a walk from the museum, we found a large street market with a very large
range of lace curtaining.
This reminded me of my visit to Paris in 1952. I stayed with family in
Fonteney-sous-Bois and one day we went to Galarie La Fayette to buy net
curtaining. Mimi only wanted plain material so that we could draw
thread a design. But the range of patterned, synthetic, materials was
amazing - even to highly patterned gros point. Coming from London where
there was none of this except grotty plain nylon I was thunderstruck
