Using a picture of lace as a pricking is possible, especially with some of the tape laces like Schneeberger, Idrian and Russian, and laces with limited stitches like Torchon. I have done it also, more than once.
However, some laces have more intricate stitches that may not show clearly in a photocopy. I'm doing a strip of Guipure from a copy of a copy of a copy. Some of the plait crossings are not really clear. It took a lot of study, with a magnifying glass, of all the repeats in the photo, to figure out the thread movements in the various parts of a repeat. I had to draw a diagram in order to remember the correct stitches and referred to it frequently during the first 20 repeats until I learned the tricky parts. Your skill level will determine how difficult a piece you can do from a picture. If you think you can do it,you probably can. If you try it, and it doesn't work, just mark it as an experiment and go on to something else. Life is too short, and there's too many patterns out there, to worry about one that doesn't work right. Don't be afraid to try something new, but also don't fret about cutting something off and going to another project.
