Dear Lacemakers,

I am using a foreign language keyboard and hope for the best.

Please do not use rain water, well water, or public water on valuable
lace.??They introduce pollutants, minerals (such as iron), and chemicals that
have been added to water.

Use distilled or de-ironized water.? Distilled can be bought at grocery stores
in many places.

My instructions, based on textile conservation classes attended?at
several?major museums, are still available at:

www.honitonlace.com

Choose the cleaning option?from the list on the left of the first page.

Newbies, please?print a copy for future reference.? I am surprised the regular
Arachne readers did not re-act to advice to use rain water.? It is not a good
idea, because all rain in all parts of the world?is polluted.?

Do not use advice?in old books, from before the time when professional
conservators tested and refined better methods.? You do not see results right
away, but UV rays damage white and colored?textiles, just as the results of
skin tanning may take years to bring on skin cancer.
