When I saw Alice's posting with Chartre included in the heading I had to read it through! I was a bit surprised to see her say there is no lace at Chartre, you see that is where I first saw it and decided I wanted to learn! My family grew tomatoes in Guernsey, Channel Islands and this meant that we couldn't take our holidays until September, when it was wiser to head south to France than north to England!! In the early 50s we did just that and included Chartre on our itinerary and on the steps of the cathedral were several lacemakers making lace and I was hooked. It did take years before I actually got to make lace but on one of my trips from New Zealand to visit my daughter in England we did a few days in Paris and so did another trip to Chartres! This was in the 90s. I was disappointed that there were no lacemakers on the steps that time and was told that they aren't there during August (when we were) as that was their holiday time. I assumed that they were there in other months! I was told that there was lace on sale in the town, so I literally ran through the streets looking for it, but didn't find any I would have to say. Mind you I was up against time to catch our bus back to Paris and perhaps if I had had time to ask someone I would have found it!! Perhaps in the intervening years there has been a decrease of interest in lace in the Chartres area, but it was once there!! Sue Fink, Masterton, New Zealand.
