I have two beanbags, both of which work fine for supporting pillows: a loosely stuffed rectangular one (actually the detachable base of a lap tray!) and a firmly stuffed "squashed cylinder" (a tube of fabric with the end sewn shut). I think pillows rock less on the loosely stuffed pillow, but I think the main thing is to have the beanbag wide enough to support the whole width of the pillow.
Best beanbag I've seen is one one of my lace-friends made; hers is circular and loosely stuffed, made the same size as her circular pillow and in fabric to match her pillow bag: while she's working on her lace, she scrunches or folds the beanbag up to give the right angle to the pillow, when she packs up to go home it sits on top of the pillow in its back, to protect the lace!
