My lace teacher could tell when cotton or silk lace had not been left "in pins" 
for at least 24 hours.  I can't, but she could.  It wasn't a matter of 
shrinkage, she said the pattern was crisper and cleaner when the thread had a 
chance to 'get used to" being in its new shape.

I'm a slow enough lacemaker (and have little enough time to make lace) that 
it's rarely a problem.  On a block or roller, I don't make so much at a single 
sitting that it can't be rolled or pushed toward the back.  I don't have to 
remove the pins till the next time I sit down (or the time after that....).  
When I finish a bookmark, I let it sit till the next day.  I can admire it on 
the pillow till then.
