Diana has got in before me! The raised pewter is due to rusting. I have one - an old one of my Grandmothers (or Great Grandmothers!), and it is almost impossible to use, as the raised spots are rough on the fingers, to say the least. Snagging other threads is another hazzard!
The spots would have been flush to the wood originally. The bobbins are called leopards, and were supposed to deflect arthritis. A snake eye bottom bead was supposed to stop the Evil Eye and prevent you making mistakes (I need a few of those!!! ) Grandma would Never start a new piece of lace on a Friday - as Friday's lace would always go wrong! I found , by chance, this was a very old superstition, and goes back to the Dark Ages. No new journey or project would be started on a Friday, as it is "an Inauspicious Day".
