Does anyone have
any tips for using beads? Is it worth getting a finer hook ie 0.4?

The problem with fine hooks is that if you are not careful you can end up splitting the thread.

Until a friend sent me a couple of "Bead Loaders" (according to the packaging they are produced by a company in Ontario), I used a length of fine wire, folded at each end. The wire came from stripping some old overhead line telephone cable (scrounged when they replaced the line to our house as the plastic sleeving that covers each wire is useful to protect the ends of prickers and needlepins) - it is quite stiff, but very fine. The fold at one end stops the beads placed on it from falling off, the fold at the other end provides a loop that you can pass your thread through, then you slide each bead back up over the wire onto the thread, at which point you can remove the wire. The Bead Loader is a similar idea - it has beads on one end to stop the beads you thread onto it from falling off (and looks decorative), the other end of the wire is folded back on itself. Using this sort of thing means you can thread more than one bead at a time, and if your thread allows, go down to fairly small beads.
