I know some here knit lace, or just knit. I haven't been able to knit lately
because of rheumatoid arthritis.
Went to the Knitting and Stitching Show in London on Thursday with Poole
Bobbin Lace Circle, and tried using the Helping Hands Knitting Aid, which
I'd seen advertised as having been originally designed for people with
rheumatoid arthritis, but helpful to anyone with problem hands. I was
sceptical that it would be of any use - it works. I did my first knitting
stitches for about 15 years.
The frame is placed on the lap with knitting needles threaded through balls
which are held in the frame. I only had to move the tips of the needles to
be able to knit again. You don't hold the needles or take the weight of the
knitting. To change direction, you just turn the unit over.
It's a bit expensive at GBP49.95 plus postage, but I got GBP10.00 off by
buying it at the show, and no postage. I'm sure a husband/partner/whatever,
who is into woodworking, could make one - but mine isn't handy :-)
Of course, it's now sitting in its original wrapper until I get around to
doing some proper knitting, but at least I know I'll be able to knit when I
want to.
