I had to do that when I did my City & Guilds in Dressmaking and Pattern
Cutting many, many years ago, except I had to use thread from the
machine-made lace and work the minutest of buttonhole stitches over the cut
ends so they were enclosed and the stitches were not visible. Those were the
days!
