Dear Arachneans Thought it was time to creep out of the lurkdom bushes as I'm beginning to feel like an eavesdropper. Having been a collector of lovely old bobbins for a while I thought I ought to learn how to use them so, with the help of some super local lacemakers, I have been dutifully working through Rosemary Shepherds exellent book. Last weekend however I peeked at the back of the book and there were - how inspiring - freestyle leaves. I picked gum leaves from the garden, drew around them onto card and used the shape to fill with random stitches, pinning just to hold the shape; they became a brooch for a wedding that afternoon. As lace goes they are a mess but I remembered something I was told when beginning to spin wool - that the first yarn achieved has a particular random uneveness that is almost impossible to replicate when more skilled and is therefore well worth keeping. With this in mind I will make leaf brooches for Christmas gifts instead of the bookmarks I was aiming for! I do love this lace chat room - a new lace digest in the inbox is a perfect excuse for another cup of coffee and escape for a while
