Hello to Brian Lemin, as far as this list goes you are a neighbour! - I was
fascinated to read your articles about pewter on bobbins which turned up
during a web search some time ago.
How long are your 'really small' bobbins? I have several old bone bobbins 8 -
8.5 cms long and less than 5mm diameter all with what seem to be original
spangles [old anyway with mismatched dirty beads and corroded wire] , some
disproportionately heavy but there is a set of 8 with neat small beads which
still carry their last thread which seems impossibly fine. Thinking about your
'what are they used for ' question I had a little play to see how to work such
fine thread which, under a magnifier, looks to be not much thicker than my own
hair. Using a dark green background I could just see where the threads were
going but only 'til stitches were tightened up, and my fine lace pins seemed
ridiculous. I am too much of a beginner to know about working different styles
of lace but such thread would make a ground like cobwebs and surely the only
way to work would be to have the memory of movements so ingrained that
actually seeing the stitches was not necessary.
