That -- twisting "extra" -- is what I've been doing too, and for the same reason (keeping track of more than one size of pin is just too much effort). I was greatly reassured to see, on a close study of (photos) the very early laces, that a "well defined" (up to 8 twists) pinhole was used -- by lacemakers far more skilled than I am -- even in place of a picot, 500yrs ago...

Some years back, when I was still dabbling with Point Ground, I *did* use a different -- colour-headed -- pin, to hang a gimp from. For the same reason that Clay mentioned -- to remind myself to remove it, before it got locked beyond the ability to tension the gimp properly. But that happened only once-twice per repeat, so I never needed more than a couple of those. Having to use a thicker pin for every picot... Yuck.
