I *think* that there are records indicating that women in the workhouses
were brought there to keep them off the streets, where they did what
they had to in order to survive. There was also a notion somewhere
along the line that any woman who depended on lacemaking to survive also
had the "side-line" to augment her income. Whether this is true or not,
if it were the prevailing thought, that's reason enough to put a clue in
a picture which indicates the innocence of the lacemakers in question.
But you raise a good question. Not being much fascinated by the
drudgery of research, I haven't explored this. But I suspect that Devon
would remember if she had come across notations on this subject.
