If you are planning a Spring visit to Washington (perhaps to see the cherry trees in bloom?), you might like to consider these two exhibits, which were announced in The Costume Society of America's newsletter. ------------------------- "PREPARING FOR THE BALL: COSTUME OF THE EARLY NATION" Through July 4 at Dumbarton House [Washington DC], this is a museum-wide exhibition of period clothing, accessories, jewelry, fashion plates and manuscripts from 1775 - 1825, displayed throughout the Federal-era period rooms and in an adjoining exhibition gallery. Co-curated by S. Scott Scholz and MARY D. DOERING [Southeastern Region]. COLLEEN CALLAHAN and NEWBIE RICHARSON [Southeastern Region] are conserving pieces for the exhibit and installing it. "FIRST LADIES AT THE SMITHSONIAN" Ongoing at the National Museum of American History [Washington DC], this exhibit displays gowns worn by first ladies during the past 100 years. The dresses include Grace Coolidge's flapper-style evening dress, Eleanor Roosevelt's pink gown from the 1945 inauguration reception, and Helen Taft's 1909 white-silk chiffon inaugural gown. The exhibition also features portraits, White House china, personal possessions and related objects from the Smithsonian's unique collection of first ladies' materials. Dunbarton House is headquarters of the Colonial Dames of America. These ladies preserve and maintain historic properties throughout America. One property is the Tate House near Portland, Maine. Sometimes, the replica fashion doll that our Tess made is exhibited there. Jeri Ames Lace and Embroidery Resource Center **************Get a jump start on your taxes.
