Alex,

I'm not sure where you are located, but if you are in the US and looking for
period doll clothing patterns, you can't go wrong with the American Girl
historical collection. They are 18 inch dolls and each character has many
outfits and accessories available, but many moms enjoy making the clothing.
The company has released pattern packages for most of the dolls, and although
I don't believe they are still available through the AG company, you can still
find them around. A good site is
www.agplaythings.com
This site has patterns for selections of the clothing for 6 of the dolls, each
from a different era, including nighties, petticoats, pantaloons, and any
number of dresses that can be embellished with lace. The "Samantha" collection
is from 1904 and includes night clothes, under clothes, a lacey pinafore, and
a Christmas dress with lace overlay on the bodice.
The dolls are wildly popular here, and if there is a girl between the ages of
5 and 13 in the family, you can bet there is a mother, grandmother, aunt, etc.
who has been inundated with requests for AG doll paraphernalia! (Take it from
the mother of a 10 yr old AG fanatic!) The patterns will fit any 18 inch
doll, so choosing a pattern like a nightgown to embellish would work for that
size doll from any company. The patterns have been simplified, so keep in
mind that if what you want is an exact, historically accurate replica, like an
antique fashion doll, then this won't help. If you are looking for a fairly
easy pattern with the correct "look", however, then these are a good way to
go. Have fun!
It occurs to me also that this might be a good way to interest a young girl in
lacemaking. My daughter wanted to learn to quilt after seeing a collection of
miniature quilts specifically made for each character. Now she wants to learn
lace to make something for Felicity, her Colonial doll. Now if only AG could
come up with a way to make her enjoy cleaning her room....
