Thank you all for your replies. I believe I have been removing the headside and footside pins too early. I will try that as well as tensioning after each stitch to see if that helps. It certainly makes sense to me. I also have some cotton on order and I will be interested to see if the issues I have disappear when I am no longer using linen.
To Jean Nathan-- The picture of the cope is lovely. I noticed a couple of fillings in there I have never seen before. What is the filling in the motif in the top center that looks like bars making a series of rectangles? Something similar shows up near the bottom right and left, only the bars there almost look like raised work.
