Arachne 'raffles' are free drawings to give away some item. When a raffle is offered, interested parties are to send an email directly to the person offering it (not to the List). At the specified time, the winning name is drawn and that person will be sent the item. The winning name, and then the thank you, are often posted to the List.
There is no money exchanged, or collected, for a charity. If a person likes the item enough, she can donate something to a charity of her choice in honor of the receiving the item, or later hold a raffle of her own ....but this is not required. We just like to share when we have duplicates or something we will no longer need. Years ago we found out that collecting charity funds on an international basis was fraught with problems, both technical and legal. A gift item costs only the postage and is legal everywhere.
