Don't forget the "placebo effect" (psychosomatic cures, mind over matter, the 
power of belief, etc.).  It is well documented that belief in a treatment can 
cure some people.  In war, sometimes doctors had to resort to saline solution 
when they ran out of morphine, and it worked on many people.  That's why drug 
trials have to include a group of people taking sugar pills, and compare the 
cure rate of their drug to the cure rate of something useless (as well as the 
cure rate of other treatments).  There is always a certain number of people who 
are cured because they believe that what they are taking/doing will cure them, 
not to mention the people who are cured because they were going to heal whether 
they had treatment or not.
