Hi, Brian
And I replied to you privately, too!!!!!!!!

No, I can tell you a Leopard bobbin does Not ward off arthritis!!! :)) My
late friend had Gold injections to try to help her, - but not Pewter!!!!! :)

However, they are pretty on the pillow working away amongst all the other
pretty bobbins!!!!!!!!!! :))

I can't see how anyone could use the bobbin without touching the spots, as
they are all up the shank, and all around it, not just up one side. She
might have just held the bottom tip, - or the spangle (a definate No-No!!)
The amount of lead you Might get through your fingers is negligable.

I am a Target Pistol shooter, and have been for 30 years. I have had my lead
levels checked a couple of times, and I am in the Low Normal range. I do
mainly Air Pistol these days, so handle about 50 - 70 lead pellets for each
match, and nothing shows up in my blood!!! So the tiny bit on a pewter spot
on a bobbin is not worth mentioning!!

I love these Old Wives Tales/Superstitions too.

The one mentioned in the Springett book about never starting a new piece on a
Friday was my contribution!!! My Gran would not start a new piece on a
Friday. She Always got a few pins in on Thursday, however late at night, so
that it was on the go for the next day!! My daughter, Helen, and I follow
suit - well, we don't want to tempt the Gods too much!!!!!!!!! :)) If we get
a piece that keeps going wrong - then we try to remember back to see if we
started it on a Friday. We blame a Friday anyway!!!!!!!!! :))

I came across a mention of the same thing in a book about Henry VIII and his
court. Apparently a Friday was an Inauspicious day to start a journey or new
venture, - and that was an old idea Then. It was handed down from the Dark
Ages, it said, so who am I to Tempt the Fates?!!!!!!!! :))
