Sue and others, I meant only that majordomo is not as user-friendly as some of the newer programs. But it does work! It just has some difficulty dealing with HTML, certain codes, and very polite subscription requests from Tamara. ;-P I don't think updating it would be feasible. Arachne is hosted at Panix.com, where Liz works (last time I was in touch with her), so it's basically free. Majordomo is the list software and it is robust and reliable. It's been years since I can recall the list ever going down for any reason. I would say that as long as there's a human (me) who can sort out subscription difficulties, there's no reason to change. Liz doesn't want to be involved on a day-to-day level with Arachne at the moment and I don't mind the little time it takes to keep an eye on things because I'm connected to a computer almost all my waking hours anyway. So the current arrangement seems to be working.
The bigger list hosts, like Yahoo Groups, offer more whistles and bells but you would really be opening the floodgates. The list would balloon in size overnight. As someone pointed out, it could be switched to a moderated list, but that's a lot more work for the moderators (I would need help because I'm off-line during Jewish holidays) and it makes the list a bit anemic when you have to wait a few hours for your message to appear. One of the reasons that this list has, in my opinion, kept its original flavour so well and remained such a helpful and civil list is because it's off the beaten path. It's a little harder to find and it spreads mostly by word of mouth, so it attracts very few trolls and flamers. Honestly, I think it's better to leave the list as it is, unless Panix.com starts to have really serious problems.
