I've been busy and just looked at one from a lacemaker who says she has to
tension by eye. This is the best way, I always tell my new students to tension
by eye rather than feel. The threads should not be made tight, they must not
be loose and baggy. By firming up with a steady tension until the thread stops
'wriggling' but not making it tight will achieve the best results and not
break threads; tensioning with a jerk is the best way of breaking threads. I
have taught many people with hand problems and they have usually found
lacemaking one of the easiest on their hands because you do not have a
constant nor a strong tension that may upset joints.

Happy lacemaking
