Jeri has brought up another good point, and that is that for those of us
who don't collect rare books, the Archives
(http://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/lace.html) makes these books
available to us. If you have gotten the disks, this book is on Disk 2.

My English language 2-volume set of the Ricci book, was priced $1,000. I
knew the dealer and was able to negotiate. This is the English language
set that Tess scanned for the Professor's site. I felt very strongly that
everyone in the world should be able to access this body of work. After
scanning, I had the bindings repaired. I think that brought the net cost
back
up to over $1,000. In 2002, I saw the set for sale somewhere for $1,400.
So, a fair IOLI price, and a good cause.
As a lace book collector, I do think IOLI should have one set in the
permanent library, even though postage to a borrower would be prohibitive.
This
is because I have learned much from my Hungarian Lace friend about lost
books and lost scholarship due to 2 World Wars and upheavals in Europe.
These precious things need to be spread around in a variety of known
locations.
Just my 2 cents.

While this is a great book, allow me to point out that the IOLI is also
selling the book in a rather large advertisement on p. 32 of the most
recent
Bulletin. In the case of the IOLI, the book is the English language
version, which is added value in my opinion, if you don't speak Italian.
Also, if
the Italian version follows the same format as the English one, put out in
1913, then it is a two volume set. It is unclear to me whether the book
selling on ebay is just one of a two volume set, or both together. If it
is
only one of the two volumes and the reserve price is $500, it would seem
to me
that the price is comparable to the two volume set offered by the IOLI
for
$1000.
