I put the picture in Photoshop to make it lighter and brighter. One nun is definitely making bobbin lace. The one to the left might be doing needle lace. The seated nun in the middle of the picture is sitting at a bolster but the work is not as clear as with the other nuns. The one at the back towards the shelf has some container in her hand. To me it looks as if she is putting oil in a lamp. At the back of the room there are shelves with all sorts of things on - even a cat lying on one of the shelves. The one nun is sitting with her back to the viewer reading, the two to the right are talking about the spinning wheel or the other nuns :-))! Jeanette Fischer,Western Cape, South Africa.
