When I was preparing my slide show, The Lace of the Robber Barons, there
was some discussion about when to try to use the pronunciation of a word, as
it would be in its original language, versus, what was more recognizable to
American listeners. I decided to use the pronunciation of Chantilly from
the song, reasoning that most Americans knew the song and that the case
could be made that Chantilly was the American word for the lace, otherwise
pronounced Chan-tee-yeh in France. For instance, as I have often (often)
said,
while defending this position, in America we say Paris, rather than Paree,
and in Paris they say Londres rather than London.
In any case, I defer to the Big Bopper on the proper pronunciation of
Chantilly. (Perhaps that is what I will say when defending myself against
such
challenges again.) :-)
