I once had a new student like yours, Debbie in Florida.
My student had done some weaving, so she almost immediately "saw" what was
going on, and happily went on her way. She came for lessons that I am sure
she really did not need, as she understood each pattern I presented to her,
straight away, and off she went, at a fast rate. I almost felt
reduntant!!!!!!!! :))

The Australian Lace Guild expects at least 30% of a pattern to be changed for
it to be an Adaptation. Just changing the stitches, or adding a footside
instead of winkie pins is not enough.
An Original design whould have to be much more 'Original" than that.

Like Clay, I can accept "Inspired by" or something similar. - I have done
that, but I acknowledge where the inspiration comes from - and if possible,
request permission to play around with the design, or use an element of it.
Most people are happy to say Yes! Especially if they are named, or their book
is named from which the inspiration/original design is taken.
A little bit of old fashioned courtesy goes a Long way!

David, that mat is Beautiful Congratulations.
Regards from Liz in Melbourne
