Jean said"So I pushed a pencil with flat sides (hexagonal or octaconal
proably) into the hole with "spikes" on the underside of the ribbon cartridge
that wound the ribbon on
when in the machine."

That's sort of what I was hoping to do - except they don't have the holes
for the pencil! Because they were still available last summer, and she had
given a cheque to a friend to order her half a dozen (but she hadn't got
round to it), she was throwing away the used ones. Now she is down to only one
spare, and friend has discovered she now can't get them. So we only have
the one in the machine to play with, and the still new one. From what Jane
said, that won't work anyway if it's a thermal ribbon.

I think she may end up with a lap top, but it seems sensible to at least
try to find some more ink for the unit she is used to using first. I don't
think that there is anything on the disks that she wouldn't be able to copy
type across into a new system - what we are trying to establish is whether she
can get more cartridges and so it's worth typing more in, or whether she
should conserve the remaining 50 or so's worth of printing that she has
available for really important stuff while she sorts out an alternative.

Many thanks for all the help and ideas.

obviously doesn't know it's a bank holiday weekend.
