Just out of curiosity, why am I "probably among those who have
benefited"?

Dear Margery,

The people of the world are really one big family. Some more sharing than
others. Norma told us what she does. It is a benefit to those who
receive. It could be sold at a minor profit, but it is given.

I cannot represent what happens elsewhere, but in America there is a strong
sense of need to volunteer skills and materials for everything from school
programs that have no funding - to the scouting movement that needs input
from experts - to professionals who help rebuild the hopes, the bodies,
and the future of our military - to literacy - to whatever you can imagine.
Beneficiaries, in time, give back to us because volunteers have built a
more solid foundation under them.

In the needlework field, there are teachers who waive their teaching fees,
so people without necessary funds can participate without calling
attention to themselves (a gift that goes to those who could pay, as well as
to
those who cannot justify spending). Teachers give "scholarships". Teachers
donate patterns and instructions, etc. simply from the love of sharing a
special skill.

Lace bulletins in various countries (not commercial magazines) contain
information and patterns - all donated.

In April's "Lace" bulletin from the U.K. there is a display ad from the
editor that says:

"It is only possible to produce Lace as a 64 page magazine with you, the
members, contributions. The Lace Guild does not commission articles; we
rely on you to share your stories, patterns, lace, new ideas, techniques,
visits, etc. with our members Everyone has something to contribute and share
no matter how small or large it is.............", etc.

And then, there is the example of Liz, who has made Arachne possible. She
"could" charge a fee!

You have not benefited?
