Per Sue's instructions, I ventured to look at this lace. There are several pieces of this type of tape lace in my collection, which disappoint next to the really nice bobbin-made Honiton laces. (It is nice for a collector to have one for comparison.)
Sold by the yard, plain tapes are often shaped into bows, as in heavier Battenburg lace. The lace bits are almond-shaped and the "almonds" are attached at the points in the machine weaving process. This makes them pretty flexible, so that 4 can make a circle, and some needlelace added. In addition to the term "Point Lace", you may remember seeing my black/ecru Princess Lace blouse of the 1930's, bought in a Galway (Ireland) vintage clothing shop. Almond shapes are appliqued on fine black net - as leaves. A scalloped (on one edge) lacy tape is gathered into flower shapes or into lovely flowing designs that are appliqued. The only black background piece I've seen is this one. It seems the picture that was on Lacefairy has been removed. To see un-made-up tapes, go to _www.Lace.Lacefairy.com_ (http://www.lace.lacefairy.com/) . Then to Lace ID - Alphabetically, and select Princess. A friend of mine, Roberta A. Chase, teaches Princess Lace for the Embroiderers' Guild of America, and has self-published a manual of detailed instructions and history, if you want to have a try.
