Dear Janet and all Lace Travelers,

If you give more than a week for response and there are people on Arachne
who live where you are going, there is a chance to make a personal contact
and they will give you much more information than someone like me can.

There has been no correspondence on Arachne regarding your question, so
here is what I can share:

There are only two Bulgarian publications in my library, both in English.

1. "Bulgarian Needlepoint Lace" by Maria Koleva, published by Svyat
Publishers, 1990, 52 pages, paper cover. Bulgaria is next to Greece and
Turkey.
It is no surprise that this lace is in the style of Armenian Lace, also
known as Oya in Turkey, and sometimes called Eastern Mediterranean knotted
lace. At book's end are 3 pages of hairpin/crochet lace for edgings. No
bobbin lace. Very nice little book. Probably out-of-print.

2. "Bulgarian Folk Costumes" by Anita Komitska and Veska Borisova, Borina
Publishing House, 2000, 16 large colorful images of women in 18th & 19th
C. regional costumes (from National Ethnographic Museum). No apparent
bobbin lace. Lots of embroidery, needlelace, knotted lace, hand-woven
fabrics.
Probably out-of-print.

There are second-hand book dealers, so consult their listings on-line.
Someone in England (per this inquiry) will have to give you the book
dealer's
names.

Some subjects you can search for on-line:

Bulgarian lace
Svyat Publishers
Borina Publishing House
"Bulgarian Needlepoint Lace"
"Bulgarian Folk Costumes"
National Ethnographic Museum Bulgaria

Some Web sites will give you e-mail addresses.

If you have anything published from Bulgaria, look at bibliographies for
more ideas.

Hi last year i went on holiday to bulgaria to a small place called Nessabar
and there was a lady who was making bobbin lace and it was very nice, I
bought
from her 2 bobbins that were slightly different having like a cover to
cover
the thread.I think she originates from Brussels. Does anyone have any
further
information on Bulgarian Lace. I am going back to Nessebar next week .

Many Thanks.
