I've seen the pocket winder, and like all winders which hold the bobbin in a groove and turn it, I wouldn't use it with painted, carved or fancy bobbins of any kind because the rubbing of the groove on the bobbin could damage them.

I find the Newnham winder works Ok with spangled bobbins if you fold the spangle so that it's behind the bobbin shaft in the winder. I also find that putting a rubber band (not too tightly) around the jaws when winding spangled bobbins makes it less likely that the bobbin will swing out of the jaws.
